Manuka Honey – Medical Grade
All Honeyskin products contain a very potent Medical Grade Manuka Honey, and it is that component which sets us apart. We have an array of fabulous ingredients in our products and we match your skin's PH - this alone is amazing, but the honey is a true miracle. Learn more about it here:
Manuka honey comes from the flowers of the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), also known as the tea tree bush, a native to New Zealand. Honey has a long history as a traditional medicine for treating all kinds of ailments from skin problems to upset stomach to sore throats.
Manuka Honey is getting a lot of press since it got approved by the FDA to be used in hospitals. Clinical trials have found Manuka Honey can effectively eradicate more than 250 clinical strains of bacteria, including resistant varieties such as MRSA. In recent tests conducted at Sydney University's School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences, Manuka honey killed every type of bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant "superbugs".
HOW CAN THIS HELP WITH SKIN ISSUES SUCH AS ECZEMA?
Throughout history, folk healers have used honey to treat everything from cuts and wounds to eczema rashes and Staph infections. This is how Manuka Honey can help with eczemas. Skin colonization with Staphylococcus aureus (Staph A) bacteria is common in patients with atopic eczema, with over 90% of patients having Staph living on their skin. Some strains of Staph A. secrete toxins that have been shown to worsen symptoms in eczema sufferers. Many types of honeys have been shown to effectively kill Staph A, with Manuka honey showing the strongest anti-bacterial effects against Staph A.
It's so good at healing infection that in many hospitals around the world now, Manuka Honey is used when nothing else works for treatment of antibiotic resistant MRSA super bugs, bed Sores and other external ulcerative conditions, Helicobactor Pylori (stomach ulcer causing bacteria), E Coli, Staphylococcus Aureus ( the most common cause of wound infection) and Streptococcus Pyogenes ( stubborn , often anti biotic resistant bacteria which inflame and cause sore throats). It is very healing externally on the skin for conditions such as burns, wounds, dermatitis, eczema, abscesses etc. It is also known to decrease the duration of bacterial diarrhea.
Latest research seems to indicate that there is a substance called MethylGlyoxal which has very powerful germ killing abilities. Why it naturally occurs in some but not all Manuka honey at extraordinarily high levels (up to 200 times stronger than all other honeys around the world) is not yet fully understood. There is a rating system called UMF to ensure that we are using the most potent Manuka honey in our products.
What is UMF?
Unique Manuka Factor or commonly known as UMF is the only worldwide standard in identifying and measuring the antibacterial strength or quality of some strains of Manuka. It is a guarantee that the honey being sold has the special UMF antibacterial property. Ordinary Manuka has only the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property which is common to most types of honey, whereas UMF Manuka has both the natural hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property and its own natural UMF antibacterial property giving it increased antibacterial potency. The UMF property is very stable, unlike the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property common to most honey which is easily destroyed by heat, light as well as certain enzymes in body serum.
UMF Manuka, also known as "Medihoney" in some pharmacies, is the preferred honey for wound dressing and other special therapeutic uses and studies are showing UMF Manuka Honey with high levels of UMF could be very effective in helping relieve stomach ulcer symptoms and gastritis, and when applied topically, in assisting the natural healing of skin ulcers, wounds, burns, boils, cracked skin, MRSA. In laboratory studies the UMF property has been found to be effective against a wide range of bacteria including the very resistant helicobacter pylori (this bacteria causes most stomach ulcers), the wound-infecting bacteria staphylococcus aureus and escherichia coli, streptococcus pyogenes (causes sore throats). Studies are also showing the UMF property helps make UMF Manuka Honey excellent for relieving sore throats and oral hygiene.
Honeyskin Products all use a very high grade of Manuka Honey which has a UMF rating of between 12 -18, which is very potent!
